THE HISTORY
That of “Guerin Meschino”,
the legendary knight errant, is a light and sad story of the young
boy Guerino, of princely origins, that was kidnapped by a
privateering vessel and sold to a merchant of Costantinople.
By this metalworker, the
young Guerino spent all his youth, showing an exceptional skill in
playing with the arms. His skill was noticed by Alexander, the
Costantinople Emperor’s son who wanted him at his service. Guerino
led and won many battles there as well as individual jousts ,
acquiring glory and fame. He also fell in love with the pretty
princess Elissena, the Emperor’s daughter , but one day he was
offended by her with the accuse to be a miserable and from that time
on all the love he had on his heart converted into a never ending
contempt. He gained a glorious victory over the Turks but this
didn’t make him happy as he was always sad and depressed. His
deepest wish was always that to know his real native land, his
parents, his name.
So it was when he was twenty
that he started to wander around the world searching for what he was
looking for. He travelled a lot, Asia, Africa, India also visiting
the trees of Sun and Moon. But nothing, wherever he went ,he asked
whether there might be Oracles able to reveal him was he was looking
for. When he was about to give up hopes, in Tunisi, the solitary
magician Calagabach talked him about Alcina, the fairy who lived in
an enchanted reign on the mountains of central Italy. He didn’t
loose any time and after a confusing trip over the Mediterranean he
finally got to Norcia where he stayed with the host Anuello.
Everybody discouraged him from taking that adventure but he bravely
carried on his intention. Once on the peak of Sybil mount he reached
the big cave, lighted up a candle e went down deeply praying all
the time. The scenery was sad and terrifying. He finally reached
the damned door that , once open, revealed a complete different
spot. Three young ladies took him to Alcina. It was midday of June,
the 15th. It was a world plenty of temptations but
Guerino , aware of his aim, managed to resist . But the fairy was
clear and told him that he would have known his origin only passing
through the road of sin. But he didn’t commit any. After 7 months
and with no results, he decided to get out. After that, he went to
Rome by the Pope in order to search elsewhere what he had not found
yet. It was God , and neither magicians nor pagans, that took him
to Apulia to defend king Guiscardo form Saracens. And there, once
released two prisoners, he found out that they were king Milone and
queen Fenisia: his parents. |
